Debre Berhane Selassie

Debre Berhan Selassie an easy stroll 2km northeast of town. Despite its walls hosting the nation’s most vibrant ecclesiastical artwork, it’s the ceiling that captures most visitors’ imaginations. Think of Mona Lisa’s smile and multiply it 104 times!

Awasa , southern Ethiopia’s largest city, is 100km further south and sits on the shores of attractive Lake Awasa. With plenty of facilities, a great fish market and row boats to boot, Awasa is a great place to stop.

Kenenisa Bekele

a feat no other runner has accomplished even once

Kenenisa born June 13,1982, Ethiopia, is a great distance runner holding as of 2008 the world records in the 5000 meters and 10,000 meters. For five years in a row, from 2002 through 2006, he took both short (4K) and long (12K) races at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, a feat no other runner has accomplished even once. In 2004, he broke the world records for the indoor 5,000m, outdoor 5,000m and outdoor 10,000m.

In 2004, the Ethiopian singer song writer Teddy Afro released a famous music video, “Tarik Teserra” or "History was Made", in honor of the world record holder and 2004 Olympic gold medalist, Kenenisa Bekele. Bekele ended the year named as the “2004 Man of the Year” by Track & Field News magazine. His accomplishments included breaking the indoor world record for 5,000m (12:49.60), the outdoor world record for 5,000m (12:37.35), winning both the short course (4k) and long course (12K) races for the third year in a row at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, breaking the world record for 10,000m (26:20.31), breaking the Olympic record in the men’s 10,000m (27:05.10) winning the gold medal, while also winning two 3,000m races and the Ethiopian Championship for 5,000m.

Interestingly, every world and Olympic record Bekele broke that year had been set by Haile Gebrselassie. On August 26, 2005, he set the current 10,000m world record (26:17.53). The same year he was voted the Track & Field News magazine “Man of the Year” for the second year in a row.

Current world records (as of February 2008)

  • 5,000m indoor world record 12:49.60 (Birmingham, England, on Feb 20, 2004)
  • 5,000m world record 12:37.35 (Hengelo, Netherlands, on May 31, 2004)
  • 10,000m world record 26:17.53 (Brussels, Belgium, on Aug 26, 2005)
  • 2,000m indoor world record 04:49.99 (Birmingham, England, on Feb 17, 2007)
  • 2 mile indoor world best 08:04:34 (Birmingham, England, on Feb 16, 2008)

Mamo Wolde

The ebony wraith...

Wolde made the marathon Ethiopia's own. By winning 1968 Olympic Gold Medal in the Marathon. Wolde's victory meant his country hadn't produced a lone prodigy, but a succession.

His portrait was enshrined among the Olympic rings atop our National Stadium and eventually would inspire other Ethiopian Olympic champions.

Miruts Yifter

"Yifter the shifter"

With undeniable energy and the love of running, his speed and will earned him the nickname of "Miruts the Shifter" and he wore the name with pride. Miruts wasn't just a talented long-distance runner, he was a remarkable one. Few runners would ever come close in comparison. He had the ability to win races with his spring-apart leap trademark that allowed him to gain quick leads over other runners in the last 200 meters or so of the races he ran. He won 221 of the 252 races that he ran. He earned Ethiopia the coveted two gold medals in the Moscow 1980 Olympics. Miruts Yifter was later awarded the "Golden Shoe" by the World Sport Journalist Association.
